Overview of the Day
Workshop objectives:
This seminar is designed to give attendees an insight into and appreciation of the large array of data that are appearing in healthcare with the key objective of showing delegates what to use and how to use it. The NHS is becoming more and more open with its data and Pharma can now start to get real insights into the drivers behind demand and patient outcomes. Information from homecare service providers and data logging devices are also providing useful insights. There has probably never been a time when there is so much useful data and computer tools capable of processing it. A great time to be in Pharma BI, and in the UK. The UK is one of the most developed markets in the world for healthcare data so the perfect workshop for new business models.
Environmental backdrop to the workshop
The healthcare environment is changing:
- The broad trend in developed economies is that healthcare is costing more and more.
- Demographics mean we have a growing number of older people who will need more care
- Technology is improving so we get better treatments and outcomes but at a cost
- Patients are getting more demanding as information gets more widely shared
- Stagnating western economies mean that there isn’t a growing pot of money to pay for healthcare
- Governments are putting proportionately less money into healthcare
- Private healthcare and insurance schemes are growing, but they have a close eye on costs
Net result: there is a great deal of pressure on the providers and suppliers (drug companies) to reduce costs.
Advances in computing and data processing mean that one of the biggest and largely untapped areas of healthcare – patient data – can now start to be mined. The outcome of these initiatives will be better healthcare: more targeted, more efficient, more effective. This can be achieved without improving current medications or medical techniques. It’s all about making what we have now work better.
Big trends:
Technology is coming into healthcare in a big way. One of the key benefits of good healthcare data, when this is turned into information, is that medical professionals and the wider healthcare industry can understand patients better. Understanding patients better means that they can be managed more effectively and efficiently. The key driver is helping people stay well or stay well enough to stay out of hospital. This keeps the nation as a whole more healthy, reduces costs, with the net result that the healthcare budget can go further.
