An Introduction to the Pharmaceutical Industry and Business Intelligence Practice

This one-day workshop is aimed at those who are new to the pharmaceutical/healthcare industry, and working in business intelligence roles (including market research, analytics and related fields) in both pharmaceutical companies and agencies. It’s suitable for permanent new starters, as well as placement students and short-term interns.

Students and trainees will be able to 'hit the ground running' after attending this overview of the pharmaceutical industry and where business intelligence fits in, run by experienced business intelligence professionals including members of the BHBIA Board and Ethics & Compliance Committee.

The workshop will engage delegates in an introduction to the NHS, how medicines are brought to market, a top-line understanding of primary and secondary market research and the power of business intelligence in fuelling brand success throughout the product lifecycle. It will provide a balance of practical information to orientate your trainees and the opportunity to ask questions about careers and next steps.

Employees who are experienced in business intelligence but new to pharma – e.g. market researchers moving from consumer to healthcare – will also benefit. However, the course is not recommended for people who are experienced in the industry e.g. sales representatives moving into Head Office.

Convener / Speaker details

Kruti originally trained as a pharmacist before moving into the healthcare business intelligence industry. She has extensive experience at senior level in both pharma and agency roles where she has built and led highly regarded Insights & Analytics functions.  Throughout, her career Kruti has been involved in the planning and launch of several successful products across a range of therapy areas so is best placed to share her experience of utilising the different data sources and research techniques available.

Kruti has recently joined the BHBIA Board and says:

"I am delighted to be joining the BHBIA board and look forward to contributing and working with my fellow board members to achieve our 2023 vision and deliver on our goals. I’ve always been a BHBIA advocate, and it’s great to have the opportunity to discuss, debate and learn so I’m especially thrilled to get involved with the development of the skills framework to underpin professional development and support members to fulfil their potential career paths. It’s an exciting time to be involved in healthcare business insights with the environment continuing to evolve and digital playing an increasing role, it becomes even more crucial to understand customers’ preferences and support robust decision making to shape future commercial activities".

Kate started her career in Pharma straight out of University in 2005 where she spent time as a Project Manager for a Contract Sales Organisation – fast becoming a jack-of-all-trades for things Sales Team related. This spanned recruitment to HR and CRM systems to sales data analysis. A move within the Business Intelligence departments of one of her clients saw her skill set developed to manage key aspects of Sales Force Effectiveness (including writing and managing incentive schemes, territory structuring, sub national data analytics, CRM system development) in addition to supporting the internal Marketing, Market Access and Commercial teams with their data driven insight generation from Brand Planning to tactical execution.

Prior to setting up KES Consultancy, Kate was a Business Intelligence Analyst at AbbVie in which role she was a member of 3 cross functional brand teams within AbbVie. This not only brought challenges of managing appropriate market, strategic planning and performance data, but also managing priorities, time and stakeholder expectations.

A past attendee of various BHBIA training events over the years, and now a member of the BHBIA Board, Kate is now keen to share her own experiences of managing business questions from the aspect of the analyst. She is a passionate believer in aspiring to shift perceptions of analysts from the people with all the spreadsheets to valued business partners and advisors!

Kate won the BHBIA's BOBI Analyst of the Year competition in 2021.

Viv has put her wealth of experience to good use in setting up Narrative Health.

Her experience has been gained throughout the product lifecycle from her Ph.D.(in pre-clinical drug development), experience of working on clinical trials, to the last 15 years in market research. This involved both FMCG but predominantly healthcare research, with Ipsos Mori and Cello where she was involved in strategy development and head of several key accounts.

Viv has presented at numerous conferences on digital transformation, innovation in research and, like many BHBIA members, spends a lot of time doing customer journey and persona development research.

Viv won the John Wheeler Award is for the Best Training Session at the BHBIA 2022 Conference for her 'NHS: Guess who?' session.

Having worked in the healthcare market research arena for most of her career, Yuliya’s passion for uncovering research insights has been supported by gaining robust experience across numerous therapy areas and methodological approaches over the years. Through her avid interest in high quality data and a real fascination with healthcare research, Yuliya has developed extensive data collection expertise and the desire to deliver ‘gold standard’ within MR by combining the drive for innovative approaches with guideline adherence and understanding.

A naturally keen ambassador for ethical compliance and guidelines, Yuliya joined the BHBIA Ethics & Compliance Committee in early 2018 to help drive compliance across the industry and has since spoken at several successful BHBIA events, eventually taking up a position as a Deputy Chair of the Committee in 2019.

Steve has over 20 years’ MR experience and has had experience in senior roles both agency and client side. Steve has a proven track record in providing high quality research, managing accounts, building and managing teams and developing and implementing strategy.

He has had a strong presence within the UK healthcare MR industry over the years and has been a regular speaker at BHBIA conference. He also headed up the BHBIA Talent Attraction Steering Group, which had the goal of attracting more talented graduates into a career in healthcare market research.
